Sisterhood of the Traveling Baby Clothes
Why I NEVER Sell Baby Clothes
Moms and Dads, we have to take care of each other.
I knew that having kids was going to be expensive. First, the prenatal doctor visits. Then designing the nursery and preparations (the fun, oh-so-cute stuff!). Then the hefty hospital bills arrive (for both you and Baby). It’s all absolutely worth it!
But is it possible to raise a growing baby on the cheap? In one way…yes! Let’s talk about how to save some serious cash with baby clothes. This is a growing tradition that may not yield you great savings today, but makes you big bucks in the “goodwill towards all” department.
Then they grow! And grow…and grow…
I was shocked to see how quickly each baby outgrew each stage of clothes. The first time I started packing a box of clothes that were too small…I was very surprised. There were adorable outfits we hadn’t even WORN yet! You know the ones. Super fancy dresses or adorable outfits that were maybe out of season. Lucky for Baby #2 (same gender), the clothes were in great shape because we had no time to wear them in!
That’s the thing–baby clothes (especially in the first year) are pretty hard to ruin. Until they start experimenting with purees and solids, there’s not much that stains in Baby’s world.
Each month I’d box away dresses, pants, shirts, coats, hats, gloves, onesies – lots of super cute clothes that were sure to save another family money. I tucked them away in the garage, in anticipation for Baby #2.
Thank you to my Mama friends!
When I was about 6 months pregnant with #1, a work friend approached me and said she was going to give us her daughter’s clothes as she grew out of them. As a naive new Mama, I must admit that I thought, “Oh that’s nice. But I’ll be dressing my baby in the cutest of clothes and I probably won’t need hand-me-downs.”
Silly Mama.
Let’s get one thing clear: New baby clothes are ridiculously expensive. The best way to get new baby clothes is as a gift at your Baby Shower or from your Baby Registry! I quickly realized that the only time I truly should be buying clothes is when we have a special event coming up (family photos, weddings, parties). Otherwise, I’d break the bank.
I’ve been so blessed to have amazing, generous Mamas who have funneled clothes my way. And not junk! Boutique wear, top quality, top brand CUTENESS.
The Only Rule: Never Sell These to Someone Else
My generous co-worker made one thing clear: She told me I could never sell these clothes, or consign them, or put them in a garage sale. I had to pass them on to another parent.
Genius!
Now as I box our last Baby’s tiny little clothes, I am encouraged to know they’re going to another Mama just like me. It’s really sweet to see photos on Insta or Facebook of their little girls wearing clothes in which my girls made memories.
I hope you’re inspired to do the same! What else do you share with your Mama friends?
Take care (of each other)!
